International Kidney day 2022 - bridging the knowledge gap is important

The statistics are worrying. 10% of the adult population worldwide has chronic kidney disease (CKD). If left untreated, CKD can be deadly. In fact, the number of deaths related to kidney disease continues to rise annually, and it is projected that by 2040, this will be the 5th leading cause of death.

Early detection will allow for disease care and management to help prevent morbidity and mortality, as well as improve cost effectiveness and sustainability. However, at all levels of healthcare, there is a demonstrably persistent and ongoing knowledge gap of chronic kidney disease.

2022 has been declared as the year of “Kidney Health for All” by The World Kidney Day Joint Steering Committee. Specifically, it aims to focus efforts on increasing education and awareness about kidney health, and thus reducing the existing knowledge gap at all levels of kidney care.

Without the aid of a crystal ball, Nipro Medical Italy had already acknowledged the importance of providing insight into the problems of chronic kidney disease a while ago. They extended our company mission of improving patient outcomes and took it to the next level: care of patients. Hence, they have unconditionally supported the course "The Basics of Hemodialysis" under the patronage of the Italian Society of Nephrology, fully embracing the intent of Prof Santoro, Scientific Director, who commented that:

This video course aims to provide knowledge of the basics of extracorporeal techniques, dissecting all the notional and practical elements that allow to prescribe a ‘good dialysis’.

The rationale for the course is that since the application of the first artificial kidney, the history of dialysis – especially in Italy – has seen a succession of research in the technological and clinical fields. This was aimed at a personalization of dialysis sessions with optimization of treatments in order to give life to the so-called "precision dialysis".

Innovation in dialysis has affected, in addition to peritoneal dialysis, all the components of extracorporeal dialysis: membranes, treatment methods that use diffusion and convection, the rhythms and frequency of dialysis sessions, machine technology, and sensors. However, in order to provide each patient with the best dialysis – adapted not only to his clinical problems but also to his needs – and to ensure a good quality of life, it is necessary to know all the potential that dialysis technology offers today.

The video course includes 11 lessons and aims to provide nephrologists, both young and experienced, with the knowledge of the basics of extracorporeal techniques, dissecting all the notional and practical elements that allow the prescription of a "good dialysis". The 11 lessons exist as standalone sessions that do not need to be taken in consecutive succession but can be selected independently based on its title and content. Every session has practical tips and clear explanations provided by expert nephrologists in the field of hemodialysis.

Concurrent to the delivery of the video lessons, participants have the possibility to access a shared space where they can ask questions or share clinical experiences on what has already been treated and presented. To further explore the topics covered as well as the questions and comments shared, the course ends with a round table with all the speakers and participants.

Thanks to the enormous success – 2,000 healthcare professionals have registered for the course and 50% have completed it entirely – other projects will again be organized again this year. To stay up to date on similar initiatives, follow us (Nipro Medical Europe) on LinkedIn.
