Welcome back to our series on Japanese Business Philosophies. In our last article, we focused on omotenashi – the Japanese concept that is a service principle where excellence in customer service is a matter of pride. Importantly, it goes beyond hospitality to emphasize mindfulness. We heard from our customers how Nipro colleagues take the core values of omotenashi - anticipation, selflessness, and sincerity – to heart and deliver exceptional service to our customers consistently.

This month, we look at the Japanese concept of en. Carrying a rich cultural and philosophical significance, en encompasses a range of related meanings, including fate, destiny, connection, and relationship. This makes it somewhat challenging to translate directly into English, especially when the audience does not have a cultural background with a similar concept.

To try to explain it in terms relatable to a Western audience, en is loosely related to the idea that lives and relationships are interconnected, and the notion that certain events and encounters are fated or destined to happen.

Another aspect of en is linked to positive flow and harmony in life. It suggests that when things are aligned in a favorable way, a sense of ease, contentment, and fulfilment will be the result. It embodies a holistic worldview that goes beyond the individual, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and cherishing the threads that connect us to others and to the unfolding tapestry of life.

Understanding the concept of en is essential to grasp the subtleties of Japanese culture, especially in interpersonal relationships and the appreciation of the interconnectedness of life’s experiences.

This is also applicable to work relationships. Embodying the concept of en involves fostering positive connections, building meaningful relationships, and recognizing the interconnectedness of work and life. Here are some ways to demonstrate en at work:

  • Build strong and positive relationships with one’s colleagues by taking the time to understand their perspectives, appreciate their strengths, and support their professional growth. By providing constructive feedback in a supportive environment, individuals can learn and grow together. Recognize that each person’s contribution plays a part in the broader success of the organization.

  • Be mindful of one’s interactions with one’s colleagues. Be present and attentive during meetings, listen actively to others, and consider the impact of one’s words and actions on team dynamics. By doing so, one will also contribute to a harmonious work environment where teamwork, open communication, and a supportive culture thrive.

  • Acknowledge the efforts of one’s colleagues and express gratitude for the collaborations that contribute to the success of a project. And whether it’s completing a project, reaching a milestone, or overcoming a challenge, recognize and celebrate all achievements, both big and small.

  • Team-building activities can foster opportunities for team members to connect on a deeper level. This connection can help team members to embrace different perspectives and experiences, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. To take it a step further, whenever possible, one should participate actively in professional networking opportunities as these could lead to valuable collaborations and partnerships that contribute to professional success.

By embodying the spirit of en in the workplace, one contributes to a positive and interconnected work culture that emphasizes the importance of relationships, collaboration, and the shared journey toward common goals.
